Palmer takes food quite seriously, considering he eats the same thing most of the time.
It’s important to pick the perfect kibble bit. And eating directly out of the bowl isn’t an option for this classy fellow. Carpet only, perhaps to ensure mom brings out his nemesis – the vacuum monster – to play on a daily basis.

Notice how Luca, the wheaten, who is four times as big as Palmer, adjusts herself so they’re equal playmates.

Bishin speaks for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation

Each year, thousands of Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life unite to participate in the Run. Their reasons for participating vary, but they all have the same goal; to create a future without breast cancer. You can read about my reasons for participating here.

This past November, I was lucky enough to travel to Toronto to work with the amazing people at the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and be part of the Run for the Cure 2010 video. Despite my preference for remaining behind the camera, I’m very proud to have been a part of this video, and to speak up and share my story. You can see me featured in the video posted below:

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs.

When it gets very cold, Palmer needs to wear little boots to go outside (otherwise he refuses to walk, and stands with one leg in the air like a tripod). He loves the boots once he’s outside, but everytime we put them on, this is what happens:

My dogs, Palmer and Luca, are a really amazing addition to my life. There have been times when I’ve been depressed, and haven’t wanted to get up in the morning. But then, a little paw would coax me out of bed. Even if I’m anxious, they still have to pee, right? So on some of my worst days, I’ve been forced to get out of bed, not by my friends or family (not that they didn’t try), but by a little life that was dependent on me.

Palmer is 5 now, and Luca is almost 4. I’ve had Palmer since he was 3 months old. He was my first dog, and I always say he made me fall in love with the entire species. Living in Quebec, I became educated about our dire puppy mill situation after I became a dog owner myself. So when it came time to get Luca, she was from the SPCA. She was 10 months old when we found her, and it was Palmer who brought her to my attention. He sat down next to her cage and whimpered. That was it. I melted. It’s crazy that this is their first real appearance on the blog. But, in all fairness, it didn’t become a personal blog until recently. Now that it is, I figured I’d post some pictures of my little muppets.

Yup, it’s officially winter

Last night, while cuddled on my sofa with a book, a cup of cocoa and two warm puppies, I gazed out the window and thought about how much I love the winter. Maybe it’s because I was raised in Montreal, but I really love snow. We had our first real snowfall of the season this week, and I couldn’t help being downright giddy.

People complain about the traffic, the shoveling, the scraping of ice off windshields… But there’s also the flip side; it’s beautiful, and there’s something unbelievably peaceful about the city after a big storm. I love to ski. I love snowshoeing and exploring the land around my family’s country house. I love my new North Face snow-pants. I love sitting in front of the fire after an adventure outdoors. I love seeing kids being pulled on toboggans on city streets. I love outdoor skating rinks.

This morning, happily bundled up and ready to begin my day, I walked out of my apartment thinking “what are people complaining about? This is beautiful.” It was at that very moment that I lost my footing on a piece of black ice and landed with a resounding thud on my hip. While lying on the sidewalk trying to decide if I should head straight to work or go back upstairs and wash the sleet out of my hair, it occurred to me that all those winter haters just might have a point….

But then I looked up at my dog, who was licking the sleet off my face, and wouldn’t you know it, she had a perfect snow mustache. So, despite the bruise on my hip and the dirt in my hair, I’m back on the winter bandwagon thanks to this face:
